This program is especially beneficial for those who experience suicidal thoughts or other self-harming behaviors caused by their condition.

What Is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

What is DBT? Dialectical behavior therapy is based on the same principles as cognitive-behavioral therapy but is specifically designed to help individuals who deliberately harm themselves or have suicidal thoughts. It allows clients to live in the moment and teaches them to be OK with how they think and feel and how to better regulate their emotions.

DBT focuses on four strategies for improving a person’s ability to handle their emotions without causing any negative or harmful behaviors:

  • Core mindfulness – This technique teaches clients how to live in the moment and stop obsessing over negative self-talk, troubling emotions, or past traumas. Therapists teach them how to use their natural senses to distract and re-focus on the present moment.
  • Distress tolerance – Clients will learn how to prepare for intense emotions that are triggered by certain people, sounds, or situations. They learn new coping skills for managing their feelings during tense situations without triggering any cravings for drugs or alcohol or suicidal thoughts.
  • Interpersonal effectiveness – Therapists work with clients to teach them how to express themselves appropriately and better communicate what they are feeling. They learn how to deal with difficult people, become active listeners, and think clearly before responding.
  • Emotion regulation – Recognizing and naming the emotions that are the most troublesome is an important step in being able to cope with those feelings. Therapists work closely with each client to help them understand and recognize the emotions that trigger negative behaviors and teach them healthy ways to ignore them.

At Kiwi Recovery, we combine dialectical behavior therapy with medical support and holistic therapies to create a whole-person recovery program. We run a full assessment of each client to create a customized treatment program that addresses all aspects of their mental health concern.

How Can a Young Adult Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program Help?

If you suspect a friend or loved one is struggling with their mental health and are at risk of suicide, enrolling in a DBT program can significantly improve their mental health. It teaches them healthy coping skills to manage their symptoms and triggers and improves their outlook on their lives and the world around them.

Here are just a few ways that a young adult dialectical behavior therapy program can benefit your son or daughter’s mental health and recovery:

  • DBT teaches clients that it is OK to feel the way they do and learn how to accept it as part of who they are.
  • DBT helps clients recognize the thoughts or emotions that cause harmful behaviors and how to replace them with healthier activities.
  • Therapists work closely with each client to teach them how to regulate their emotions and stop the endless loop of negative self-talk.
  • DBT can improve communication skills and teach clients how to be active listeners and think before they respond.
  • Clients will have the opportunity to build healthy relationships with their peers that will support their recovery and be there during difficult times.

Dialectical behavior therapy is just one part of an all-encompassing treatment program. Clients will participate in a number of beneficial therapies along with medical support to minimize those symptoms that are causing the most disruption.
