What Is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

What is acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)? It is an action-oriented type of behavioral therapy that teaches clients about accepting their current situation and committing to making positive changes. It helps clients face their negative thoughts, emotions, or past traumas and prevents them from getting worse and leading to substance abuse or other harmful behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy is very beneficial when combined with other types of behavioral and holistic therapies.

At Kiwi Recovery, we support teens and young adults who are struggling with depression, PTSD, substance abuse, or other mental health disorders. Our inclusive treatment center welcomes everyone who is ready to commit to their recovery and a healthy lifestyle. We run a full assessment of each client to determine the best types of therapies and medical support to include in their treatment program. What Is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

Acceptance and commitment therapy was developed in the 1980s by psychologist Steven C. Hayes after his own experiences with panic attacks and his decision to no longer run from his problems and accept his situation. ACT is not about fixing or replacing negative emotions and feelings but accepting that the way they think and feel is a part of who they are. As individuals learn to accept this fact, their thoughts and feelings will have less of an impact on their day-to-day lives.

ACT can treat a number of mental health disorders and other conditions, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Psychosis
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance use disorders
  • Workplace stress
  • Chronic pain

ACT works under the belief that trying to control negative thoughts or painful memories can cause significant stress and worsen their symptoms. Therapists work closely with each client to identify the problem areas and teach them how to accept how they feel and learn to be OK with it. From there, they teach them the steps necessary to change the behaviors that are triggered by their negative thinking.

At Kiwi Recovery, our accredited treatment programs use a combination of ACT and other types of behavioral and holistic therapies that promote a healthy mind and body. For clients with severe symptoms, we provide medical support to ease symptoms that get in the way of their recovery goals.

The Benefits of Young Adult Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Enrolling in a treatment program that offers ACT can be very beneficial for your mental health and future happiness. As clients learn to accept their thoughts as they are, the more they are able to prevent their symptoms from worsening and causing significant problems.

Here are some of the benefits of a young adult acceptance and commitment therapy program:

  • ACT teaches clients that their way of thinking is a part of who they are and to learn to be OK with how they think and feel.
  • Therapists teach clients healthy ways to cope with stress, anxiety, and other disruptive ways of thinking so they don’t cause a major disruption to their day.
  • ACT shows clients with substance use disorder how to examine how they were using to hide from their thoughts and emotions and find new ways to process those feelings.
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy may help some clients reduce or stop taking anti-depressants, anti-anxiety, or antipsychotic medications.
  • ACT can encourage clients to continue with their therapy for as long as it takes to improve their mental health.

What is acceptance and commitment therapy? It is a very beneficial type of therapy that helps participants accept their distressing thoughts and emotions and prevent them from causing any problems in their day.
